About the Department

In the last five years, the number of students declaring majors in the Department of Chemistry has doubled and several of our graduates have joined the list of alumni who went on to earn a Ph.D.

The college's investment in modern facilities has played a major role in our department's growth and academic success. In the Natural Science Center that opened in 2002, we have high-quality laboratories and equipment that promote learning and research.

Dedicated faculty members are another reason our department is thriving. In addition to teaching a wide range of programs, they provide opportunities for chemistry majors to participate in undergraduate research projects.

As a department, we are committed to providing the best educational experience for our undergraduates. We are continually trying new methods of teaching which include incorporating the latest technology.  Some examples include:

  • Podcasts and online learning modules
  • Web-based testing applications with three-dimensional graphics
  • Service learning projects.

The student-to-faculty ratio in our department is typically 30 or less, often 20 or less in the laboratory. All lectures and laboratories are held in "smart classrooms" where audiovisual presentations and demonstrations are used as teaching tools.

Our department also has a very active chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS) that conducts seminars and community outreach programs.
